Day 10 – June 24th
Our friend Quentin said at breakfast in Lake Louise, “There is no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing.” Good advice for motorcyclists. We can adapt to all conditions, 30’s -100’s, but today’s weather is the preferred kind; 59- 80 with lots of sun.
The day started with a great breakfast at Mama Z’s in Dease Lake, across from the Arctic Divide Lodge. We mentioned her on yesterday’s blog. We can’t say enough about Zora’s friendliness and hospitality. We had asked her last night if she would make us sandwiches for the road, knowing there wasn’t much between Dease Lake and the Junction of Hwy 1. When we arrived for breakfast she said the sandwiches were ready to go; fresh turkey breast, lettuce, cheddar cheese, on toasted wheat one side and white on the other. When we left she came outside to wave like we had known each other for years.

The Cassiar Hwy is spectacular! The one hundred miles we had left today was great. I clocked the length of Dease Lake on my odometer; approx 37 miles!

It is just like Texas up here. Everything is big and on steroids, especially the mosquitoes.
I hope that was a mosquito on the bottom lip of the light grill

I bought a piece of jade at the Jade Store, a popular stopping point on the Cassiar. We said we were going to Church of the Open Road, but we just missed services across the street from the Jade Store. The doors were closed and we could hear singing inside. I don’t know how many could fit in this tiny church, but as you can see you can drive anything to church.
These folks have the cozy church, looks like maybe two seats on each side of the aisle.

We stopped to eat our sandwiches shortly after we were heading west on the Alaska Hwy. The rest stop didn’t have a picnic table so we tired some different things. Shawn sat down on some grass on the edge of the woods and in about 3 seconds she had a few dozen mosquitoes trying to land on her face. Chuck decided the shade of the out house worked well but he had to bob his head around to keep the bugs from landing. Chuck commented “I have quite the following going on here.” I preferred standing in the middle of the parking lot where the breeze was, most of the time, strong enough to keep them at bay. Everything on our trip has been an adventure.

Barbara's second time using a pit toilet in her entire life, It's another adventure

We stopped one more time before arriving in Teslin, YK, because the turkey sandwich was putting me to sleep. Shawn and Barbara agreed but Chuck was in denial.

Still beautiful after all these days

The sky darkened as we approached our destination of the day and we expected a downpour but it passed by over the lake and we stayed dry. Tonight was laundry night for Scott and Shawn. Chuck and Barbara are on a different schedule.

It is  nice enough outside to be blogging at a picnic table. I will have to get closer to the Café to get on the web and post. It’s a tough life on the road, but we are honored to suffer through it. (if you are a motorcycle rider you know that’s a lie).

We appreciate you all keeping us in your prayers. We feel safe because of it.
